Golfers finish second at last conference meet

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' golf team finished second at their last conference meet at Albany on Monday, April 16.

The Dogs shot 163, six shots behind first-place Albany, but edging Cathedral (164) and LPGE (164) for second.

Senior Mitchell Mackedanz led the Dogs with a round of 39, finishing fourth overall at the meet, a stroke behind the three co-medalists. Senior Cody Flanders and junior Ross Barten added 41s for the Dogs, and eighth grader Zach Fuchs shot 42.

Mackedanz wrapped up the individual conference title with his round at Albany. For individual scoring, only the best five scores are used. Mackedanz had two 37s, two 39s, a 40, and a 42 in the six conference meets this spring.

In the five that count towards the individual standings, he averaged 38.4 strokes per round. He won the individual conference title by five strokes over Brent Egan of Sauk Centre and earned All Conference for the third straight year. Last year, Mackedanz was the individual conference runner-up and placed fourth in Class A at state.

The top ten individuals earned All Conference honors. Junior Justin Bork finished 15th individually (five strokes out of All Conference), Fuchs finished 20th and Flanders 21st (both seven strokes out of All Conference), and Barten finished 25th (17 stokes out of All Conference).

As a team, the Dogs finished fifth in the conference standings. They placed second at home and at Albany, fourth at St. Cloud, fifth at LPGE and Melrose, and sixth at Sauk Centre. Albany (32 points) won the conference title, followed by LPGE (24), Cathedral (24), Sauk Centre (21), Paynesville (18), and Melrose (7).

This week, the Dogs will start their playoffs with the subsection meet at the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker on Wednesday, May 25. Play started at 8:30 a.m.

Next week, if the team or any individuals advance, they will compete at the section tournament at Rich-Spring Golf Course between Richmond and Cold Spring on Tuesday, May 31, at 8:30 a.m.
