Rally lifts Dogs past Sauk Centre

Paynesville came back to beat Sauk Centre Thursday when they scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs trailed 11-4 after the Streeters scored three runs in the sixth inning, but rallied with nine runs in the seventh. They held on to win the game 13-11.

Junior Kelli Heinen said, "Even though we were frustrated in the top of the seventh, we came back as a team and picked up a huge victory."

After Sauk Centre took a 4-1 lead, the Bulldogs managed to bring in three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Jenny Habben hit a single and stole second and third base. She was brought home by Amy Buermann's single. On two passed balls, Amy Buermann moved to third. She scored on Kim Hess' single. Then Hess moved to third on wild pitches, and Laurie Barten drove home Hess with a hit into left field.

Third baseman Lindsey Emblom hit three home runs for Sauk Centre, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 11-4 in the seventh, Lisa Hemingson and Ann Stalboerger walked in the seventh inning. Heinen tripled to score them both.

Habben reached on an error, which scored Heinen, and Habben then reached third on stolen bases. Buermann was walked and stole second base. Jen Bruntlett hit an RBI single to bring Habben home. Mellody Veldkamp hit a single, which brought Buermann home.

Bruntlett scored on a passed ball. Veldkamp stole third base, which put her in great a position to score on Stalboerger's hit.

The Bulldogs played good defense to get the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and then Hemingson struck out Emblom for the third out.

The Paynesville Bulldogs were seeded fifth in the subsection and played the fourth-ranked team, St. Michael-Albertville, on Monday, May 21. The Bulldogs lost 7-5 and ended their season with a 9-9 record. A full recap of their subsection loss will run next week.

The Paynesville Bulldogs soared to a win against LPGE on Monday, May 14. Paynesville had 16 hits to bring in 13 runs compared to LPGE's three runs. Veldkamp had four hits, including two triples and a double. Barten and Habben both had three hits. Barten had two RBIs. Hess had two hits and scored three runs.

In the first inning, Barten had a base hit and reached second on an error. Barten advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on Veldkamp's base hit. Veldkamp stole second and third base but was left on base. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the second inning, scored three runs in the fourth inning and again in the fifth, and two runs in the seventh to win 13-3. Hemingson pitched the complete-game victory, allowing only four hits and three runs.

Paynesville committed eight errors and lost to Renville County West 13-8 on Friday.

The Bulldogs, who didn't play up to their ability, didn't score any runs until the fourth inning.

Trailing 7-0, they scored four runs in the fourth. Habben hit a single and made it to third on stolen bases. Buermann was walked and Habben was brought home on Hess' single. Barten came up to bat with runners on second and third and hit a home run to bring in three runs.

RCW, though, answered with six runs in the fifth inning to take a 13-4 lead.

The Bulldogs scored four more runs in the sixth. Habben scored on Hess' two-run homer, and Barten scored on Veldkamp's two-run home run. RCW held on to win 13-8.
