Solo homers back strong pitching in baseball win

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs baseball team beat Albany 2-1 in Avon on Friday to conclude the regular season.

Senior catcher Ryan Schneider hit two solo homeruns to provide all the offense that junior pitcher Josh Kampsen would need, as he threw a complete game, allowing only one unearned run on two hits.

Schneider broke a scoreless tie with his solo homer with one out in the top of the fifth. Then, with Paynesville leading 1-0, he hit another one-out homer in the top of the seventh.

The Huskies got their only run in the bottom of the seventh, when an error prolonged the inning and put the tying run in scoring position before Kampsen induced the final out.

The victory was just the second in conference play for the Bulldogs, who finished their West Central Conference North schedule with a record of 2-10.

The Bulldogs, though, are 5-1 in nonconference play (7-11 overall) and have been seeded second in their subsection.

The Dogs beat the top seed in the subsection (ACGC) earlier this season, but did not face the Falcons' top pitcher.

Coach Brad Skoglund said the team needs to get good pitching and solid defense to do well in the playoffs. "We've got to play good ball," he said. "We've got to worry about ourselves and not our opponents."

The Bulldogs will open the subsection playoffs on Thursday, May 23, when they host winless New London-Spicer at 5 p.m. The Dogs beat the Cats 6-5 in April.

If they win, the Bulldogs will face either Rockford or Kimball in the subsection semifinals on Tuesday, May 28, at Maple Lake at 5 p.m.
