Fenskes receive awards at USD banquet

Among the athletes recognized at the first athletic awards banquet at the University of South Dakota (USD) were Joel and Tina Fenske of Paynesville.

Joel, a senior, was one of three individuals who received the Carl B. Rube Hoy Endowment Award, which goes to athletes who have distinguished themselves as both competitors and students. He is the only athlete in the history of USD to earn All-American honors four times in cross country.

Joel was a team captain and led USD to the 1997 national cross country title. He was All-North Central Conference four times, all-region four times, and an academic All-American three times. He also qualified for the national outdoor track meet once. He has a 3.21 GPA.

Tina, also a senior, received a USD scholar-athlete certificate. She was an All-American four times, three times in track and once in cross country, finishing tenth at the 1998 NCAA Division II cross country meet. She holds the record at USD for the indoor mile. She was an academic All-American twice, All-North Central Conference twice, and all-region twice. She has a 3.45 GPA.
