Softball team tops Albany in eight innings

Sophomore Chelsey Hansen singled through a drawn-in infield in the eighth inning as the Bulldogs softball team defeated Albany 5-4 in extra innings on Tuesday, May 9.

The Dogs had led 4-1 until Albany rallied with two runs in the fifth inning and a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game 4-4. The Huskies got their only two hits of the game in the seventh inning to tie the game, a triple followed by an RBI single.

Senior Jess Engler singled to left to start the eighth inning for the Dogs and advanced to third on a sacrifice and a groundout. Hansen then singled when her ball took a short hop in front of the Huskies' shortstop to score Engler.

With the victory, the Dogs concluded a season sweep of Albany, having beaten the Huskies 20-5 in April in Albany.

The Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against the Huskies with senior Allyson Klenke delivering a two-run single. After Albany cut the lead to 2-1, the Dogs added two runs in the bottom of the fourth when senior Mel Mages hit an RBI double and sophomore Laura Schaefer followed with an RBI single.

Sophomore Ashley Ogdahl pitched eight innings for the complete-game victory, allowing only two hits and two earned runs.

The Dogs (6-5 in the WCC North and 9-7 overall) were scheduled to play a doubleheader with NL-S on Monday and their last conference game at Melrose on Tuesday.

On Friday, the Dogs are scheduled to host ACGC.

Next week, the subsection playoffs will begin. Seeding will be held on Wednesday, May 17, but the Dogs are expected to be seeded third and would host a subsection quarterfinal game on Monday, May 22, at 4:30 p.m. The subsection semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, at 4:30 p.m. in Loretto with the subsection final on Thursday, May 25, in Loretto.

Sauk Centre 7, Dogs 6
The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Bulldogs by one run for the second time this season. The Streeters also beat the Dogs 2-1 in April at PAHS.

The visiting Dogs took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second. Junior Chelsey Kalkbrenner hit a two-run homer - a liner past the Streeters' leftfielder - for the first two runs. The Dogs then loaded the bases on two walks and a single by sophomore Carissa Utsch and then scored two more runs on a pair of fielder's choices.

Sauk Centre, though, tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the third and took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sauk got five straight hits in scoring four runs in the third and got a two-run homer to take the lead in the fourth.

The Dogs closed the gap to 7-6 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Laura Schaefer hit a solo homer down the line in left for the first run, and a Sauk error allowed the Dogs to score an unearned run later in the inning.

The Dogs are now 1-4 in one-run games this year.
