Dogs pound NL-S as Louis throws one-hitter

Jessi Louis The Bulldogs played a great game at home against New London-Spicer on Monday, May 8, and defeated the Wildcats 12-0.

The game ended after five innings. The Bulldogs won by the ten-run rule as Lisa Hemingson ended the contest with a grand slam home run.

Senior Jessica Louis(pictured at right) pitched a one-hitter over five innings for Paynesville, shutting out the Wildcats. The Bulldogs managed to play defense without any errors.

On offense, the Bulldogs had 11 hits and scored a season-high 12 runs. Jenny Habben, Lisa Hemingson, Laurie Barten, Crystal Humbert, Mellody Veldkamp, Kelli Heinen, and Tiff Haag all had hits for Paynesville.

The Bulldogs scored one run in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, they really started swinging the bats and bringing in the runs. Paynesville scored five times in the fourth.

In the fifth, Veldkamp got to first and advanced to second on Heinen's hit. Habben hit a ground ball, and all were safe. When Hemingson came up to bat, the Bulldogs needed two runs for the ten-run rule. Hemingson had a count of 1-2 when she hit the ball past the left fielder's head. Hemingson rounded the bases, scoring four runs and making the final score to 12-0.

Coach Tim Woehler said, "The girls hit the ball real well today. I'm very proud of them."

The Bulldogs game against Cathedral on Thursday, May 11 was cancelled due to the rain.

The Bulldogs lost a conference game to Melrose on Tuesday, May 9.

Paynesville, playing at home, came out with the lead in the first inning by scoring three runs. However, in the second inning, Melrose managed to score four runs. The Bulldogs scored one run to tie the game at 4-4.

Paynesville was unable to score again, but Melrose managed to score a run in the last three innings to win 7-4.

Paynesville's Kelly Loesch, a senior, struck out three batters and only gave up five earned runs in six innings.

Loesch had two hits for Paynesville, and senior Tiff Haag had the other. They both scored a run.

Paynesville was unable to score any runs in the windy, cold conditions against Albany on Friday. The Bulldogs were shut out for the first time this season as the Huskies won 5-0.

Albany scored a run in the second and in the third, and then managed three more runs in the seventh inning due to errors made by the Bulldogs.

Haag and Louis got the only hits for Paynesville.

Jessica Louis gave up only three hits and two earned runs, but walked five.

Lisa Hemingson, a sophomore shortstop, said, "We just couldn't get the bats going."
