Lake Henry rallies to defeat St. Martin 8-7

By Michael Jacobson

The Lake Henry Lakers rallied to defeat the St. Martin Martins 8-7 on Sunday in Lake Henry, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the Stearns County League game, evening both teams league records at 1-1.

Scoring run The Lakers led 5-0 before the Martins scored seven unanswered runs in the fourth thru seventh innings. The Martins took the lead 6-5 on Sam Rothstein's three-run homer to right, into the wind, in the sixth inning. They added a run in the seventh to lead 7-5 when the Lakers botched a rundown between home and third.

Pinch runner Wes Lieser scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning for Lake Henry as the throw home bounced away from st. Martin catcher Jake Thelen.

The Lakers got within one run again in the bottom of the seventh on Josh Kampsen's RBI double.

Trailing 7-6, Jeff Spritzer and Brent Lieser singled to start the eighth inning, with pinch runner Wes Lieser scoring the tying run on a grounder to second, beating the throw to the plate. After Jon Lieser hit an infield single deep into the hole, Kampsen plated the winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt.

The Lakers built a 5-0 lead with an RBI single by Brent Lieser in the second inning and on a grand slam homer to left in the third by Mike Stalboerger. The Martins walked the bases loaded before Stalboerger cleared them with his homerun.

Diving for the ball The Martins loaded the bases in both the fourth and fifth innings, scoring two runs in the fourth, on a fielder's choice and an error, and one run in the fifth, on a fielder's choice, to cut the Lakers' lead to 5-3, setting the stage for Rothstein's go-ahead homer in the sixth.

Jon Lieser - diving in vain for a ground-ball single - went 3-3 for Lake Henry on Sunday and earned the pitching victory in relief for the Lakers.
