Bulldogs beat BBE for second win

The Bulldogs beat BBE last week, but dropped two other contests.

The Bulldogs won their second game of the season 6-5 against BBE in Brooten on Friday.

BBE came out strong in the first inning and scored five runs before the Bulldogs could get the first out. But the Bulldogs held BBE scoreless for the rest of the game. Senior Jessi Louis earned the pitching victory for Paynesville.

Trailing 5-0, the Bulldogs used several rallies to tie the game and then take the lead. The Bulldogs scored twice in the second, twice in the third, and twice in the fifth to take the lead, 6-5.

Mellody Veldkamp, who had a double and three RBIs, had the game-winning hit for Paynesville.

Lisa Hemingson, Tricia Hemmesch, Laurie Barten, and Rachel Miller also had hits for the Bulldogs. Hemmesch and Miller each had an RBI.

Coach Tim Woehler said, ÒWe are starting to play with better consistency. We are getting closer to playing a full solid seven innings. Our last three games have been decided by three runs or less because weÕve had one bad inning. Today the team showed a lot of heart.Ó

All Louis said about the game was, ÒA sizzling day brought sizzling results!Ó

The Bulldogs were eager to beat the Mainstreeters again when they traveled to Sauk Centre on Thursday. Paynesville played tough, but were unsuccessful in gaining a victory, losing 8-7.

Paynesville came out strong in the first inning with three runs. For the next five innings, the teams traded runs, with the Bulldogs leading 7-4 to start the last inning.

The Bulldogs were unable to get any runs in the top of the seventh, and they went onto the field knowing that they had to hold a 7-4 lead.

Sauk CentreÕs three singles and the BulldogsÕ errors and passed balls allowed Sauk Centre to bring in four runs.

Coach Woehler said, ÒThe girls played a great game for six innings. It was a tough loss. I was really pleased with the way we came out and jumped out early.Ó

The Bulldogs were gracious hosts to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Tuesday, May 2. LPGE was able to pull out game 10-7 due to six errors, six wild pitches, and a few hard hits.

Mel Veldkamp went 2-3 at the plate and had a triple. Veldkamp scored one run and had two RBIs. Laurie Barten had two hits, scored two runs, and had an RBI. Tricia Hemmesch had a hit and scored two runs. Crystal Humbert had the other hit for Paynesville.

Jessie Louis pitched well in six innings of relief. Louis only gave up two earned runs and four hits. Louis also had five strikeouts. Starter Kelli Loesch allowed on one hit and two walks, but was victimized by defensive lapses that allowed six unearned runs to score against her.
