Pirates rally to beat Norway Lake behind relief pitching

The Pirates evened their league record with a 14-10 victory in a slugfest Sunday at Paynesville. The Pirates scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-10 lead, and the game ended on a whimper, as neither team scored in the last three innings.

Norway Lake scored seven times in the third inning to take an 8-2 lead, but the Pirates scored three in the bottom of the third and four in the fourth to tie the game at 9-9.

The Pirates took the lead 10-9 in the fifth, and then, after Norway Lake tied it with a run in the sixth, they scored four times to win in the sixth.

Danny Starken pitched the last six innings in relief to earn the pitching victory for Paynesville.

At the plate, Aaron Bayer had four hits and four RBIs. Darren Michaelis had three hits and two RBIs. Chris Soine had three hits, scored three runs, and hit a home run in the fourth. Shannon Olmscheid also had a home run for the Pirates.

The Melrose Black Sox scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh and beat the Regal Eagles 12-3 Sunday.

The teams exchanged runs in the first inning, but Melrose took a 5-1 lead with runs in the fourth and fifth. Regal scored twice in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-3, but Melrose responded with six more runs.

Chad Hess had three hits, including two home runs, and three RBIs to lead Melrose. Grant Hess also homered for the Black Sox.

For Regal, Mike Beier had two hits, including a homer, and Brad Lieser also had two hits. Randy Beier added a home run and two RBIs.

Regal outhit Melrose 10-9, but the Eagles pitchers allowed nine walks. Regal batters got only two from Melrose.

The loss drops Regal to 0-2 for the season.

Richmond scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to hand Lake Henry their first loss of the season 7-6.

The Lakers scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, but Richmond came right back in their half of the inning. The Lakers could only score once in the top of the ninth.

Jeff Olmscheid hit a two-run homer for the Lakers in the fourth inning, and Tom Ludwig hit a three-run shot to give the Lakers a temporary lead in the eighth.

Steve Lieser also had two hits for Lake Henry.

Roscoe Rangers The Rangers pounded out 21 hits to earn their first league win of the season 12-6.

Tony Orbeck led the barrage with five hits and seven RBIs. Orbeck hit for the cycle with a two singles, a double, a triple, and a home run.

Todd Leyendecker reaches for a line drive while playing third base for the Rangers.

Jeff Welle, Lee Schleper, and Brent Heinen each had three hits for Roscoe. Dale Mackedanz had two hits with a homer, and Chris VanderBeek added two hits for the Rangers.

The loss kept St. Martin winless in the Stearns County League this season.
