Bulldogs beat Renville County West, 7-3

The Bulldogs softball team scored all seven of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings to beat Renville County West 7-3 in a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 30.

The Paynesville Bulldogs gave up a run early in the game, but both teams had solid defense until the fourth inning.

Senior Laurie Barten hit a single past second base, advanced to second on an error, and stole third. Senior Lisa Hemingson brought Barten home with a base hit to left field. Hemingson then stole second base and third base.

Hemingson scored on junior Ann Stalboerger's base hit towards shortstop. Junior Trisha Chevalier, who went 3-3, added a base hit. With Stalboerger and Chevalier on base, senior Amy Buermann hit a homerun down the third base line to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, RCW scored two runs, but Paynesville answered with their own two runs when ninth grader Kim Hess and Barten scored.

Neither team scored in the last two innings.

The Paynesville Bulldogs hosted Albany yesterday. They will play at Litchfield on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and will host LPGE on Friday at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs will travel to Sauk Centre on Monday, May 13, and they will travel to Holdingford on Tuesday, May 14. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.

Melrose 6, Paynesville 3
Despite a fifth inning rally, the Bulldogs fell short against Melrose and lost 6-3 on Thursday.

The Dutchmen took hold of the game early by scoring four runs in the first two innings while they kept the Bulldogs stranded at first base for four innings.

Melrose scored two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead, but Paynesville answered when senior Heather Roos had a base hit and advanced to second on an overthrow. Roos was brought home by Hess' hit up the middle. Senior Kelli Heinen hit a double to bring in Hess, and Heinen scored later to make it 6-3.

Paynesville was unable to score again in the last two innings.

Cathedral 6, Paynesville 0
The Bulldogs lost 6-0 on Friday in a conference game to St. Cloud Cathedral. Paynesville was outhit by Cathedral 5-4.

The Bulldogs struggled with their batting and were unable to score throughout the game. Barten went 3-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs but was left on base all three times.

St. Cloud Cathedral scored their first run in the second inning. Cathedral scored four more runs in the third inning and scored their last run in the fifth to win 6-0.

The Bulldogs committed two errors while Cathedral had a perfect game with zero errors.

"We are a better team than we've shown so far this year," said coach Tim Woehler. "Victory favors the team that makes the fewest mental mistakes."
