St. Martin tops Roscoe 9-5 on cold Sunday

Ken Arceneau The St. Martin Martins evened their record in the Stearns County League with a 9-5 victory over the Roscoe Rangers on Sunday in St. Martin in cold, windy, and rainy conditions.

The Martins rallied from an early deficit by scoring eight runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 9-5 lead. Then, in four innings of relief, Ken Arceneau got 10 of 12 outs by strikeout.

Ken Arceneau hit a bases-loaded double for St. Martin and earned a save on the mound by striking out ten hitters in four innings.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Arceneau gave the Martins the lead with a bases-clearing double to leftcenter, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead.

But Roscoe scored three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. Brent Heinen singled and scored on a passed ball. Tony Orbeck added an RBI double, and Bret Aagesen had an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, St. Martin scored three more runs. Jake Thelen hit a double to right, Luke Rothstein hit an RBI double to center, and Josh Harrison had an RBI infield single.

Jesse Thielen scoring In the sixth inning, Rothstein had another double to score two more runs for St. Martin, which is now 1-1 in league. Roscoe is 0-2 in league.

St. Martin hosts St. Nicholas on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and they will play at Farming on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Roscoe hosts St. Stephen on Saturday at 1 p.m. and hosts Meire Grove on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Paynesville 16, Norway Lake 9
The Paynesville Pirates slammed 19 hits and three homeruns to beat Norway Lake 16-9 on Sunday in their Cornbelt League opener.

Josh Williams had four hits and two homeruns for the Pirates. Steve Barten also had a homerun, and Dave Hemmesch and Chris Stanley each had three hits.

The Pirates overcame making six errors by having 19 hits and scoring 16 runs. They led 14-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Tyler Wuertz earned the pitching victory for the Pirates, going seven innings.

The Pirates - now 1-0 for the year - will play at Regal on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

NL-S 9, Regal 7
New London-Spicer scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Regal Eagles in their Cornbelt League opener on Sunday.

The two teams were tied 3-3 after six innings, and Regal took a 7-6 lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. But NL-S scored three runs in the ninth to win 9-7.

Regal is now 0-1 in league and 1-1 overall. They will host Paynesville on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Lake Henry 5, Farming 2
Mike Stalboerger pitched six innings to earn the victory, and Doug Fuchs pitched three shutout innings to earn a save as the Lakers improved to 2-0 in the Stearns County League by beating Farming 5-2 in Lake Henry on Sunday.

With the wind blowing straight in, offense was limited. Farming outhit Lake Henry 9-7 but also made five errors. Four of the Lakers' runs were unearned.

The Lakers had four successful sacrifice bunts and scored the runner three times, which pleased manager Keith Lieser.

The Lakers also lost an exhibition game on Saturday to Princeton 8-5, their first loss of the year. The Lakers are now 3-1 overall.

The Lakers will play at Dassel on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and they will play at Richmond on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
