Pirates shut out in Cornbelt League opener

The Paynesville Pirates were shut out by the Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers 9-0 on Sunday in the Cornbelt League opener for both teams.

The game was delayed three times due to snow.

NL-S took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. They led 5-0 before scoring three more runs in the seventh inning.

The Pirates had only five hits and committed seven errors in the loss.

Richmond 4, Spring Hill 0
Scott Ruegemer and Nate Guetters combined to hurl a seven-hit shutout as the Richmond Royals evened their Stearns County League record at 1-1 with a 4-0 win over Spring Hill on Sunday.

The Chargers dropped to 0-2 in the Stearns County League with the loss at Richmond.

The Royals scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Todd Steil and three runs in the sixth inning, with Brent Ruegemer delivering a two-run single.

Spring Hill outhit Richmond 7-6 but the Chargers walked seven and committed five errors.

On Sunday, the Chargers will play at New Munich.

Lake Henry 10, Avon 6
The Lakers broke a 3-3 tie with a five-run seventh inning and defeated Avon 10-6 in an exhibition game on Saturday.

Kevin Gruber hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for the Lakers. Josh Kampsen hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead, and Jeff Schmitz hit a solo homer for Lake Henry in the second inning.

The Lakers (2-1 overall, 1-0 in the Stearns County League) postponed their Sunday game against Farming due to the cold weather. This week, the Lakers will host St. Martin on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
