Lakers use home runs for 14-9 victory

Rangers celebrate The Lakers jumped to a 6-0 lead on Chad Spanier's second inning grand slam, and held off the Rangers 14-9 in Lake Henry.

The Lakers scored once in the first and had already scored in the second when Spanier took advantage of the wind blowing straight out and cleared the bases with a home run.

Chad Spanier Spanier(pictured at left) also hit a two-run homer in the third. He finished with six RBIs. He also walked three times.

Dale Mackedanz hit a two-run homer for the Rangers in the fourth, and Lee Schleper hit a two-run shot in the sixth. Todd Leyendecker led off the seventh with an opposite-field blast to right, and the Rangers scored twice more thanks to four walks in the inning.

The Lakers' final runs came on Adam Miller's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. The Rangers scored twice in the ninth on three singles.

Roger Wuertz earned the pitching victory for the Lakers with six strong innings of work. He allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Elrosa's Chad Kampsen and Randy Duevel silenced the St. Martin bats on Sunday. The visiting Saints handed the Martins a 1-0 loss to begin the Stearns County League schedule.

Kampsen pitched three innings of scoreless baseball, and Duevel pitched five innings in relief to get the victory. Duevel yielded only one hit, though he walked five, and struck out six.

The Saints scored the game's only run in the top of the fourth when Pat Illies led off the inning with a double. Kampsen scored him with a single.

The Titans broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth. They handed Regal a 9-2 loss to start the County Line season.

Paul Kane had a grand slam homer in the top of the eighth to put Sauk Centre ahead. He finished with three hits and six RBIs.

After trailing 2-0, Regal rallied to tie with runs in the third and the seventh.

The Titans outhit the Eagles 13-5.

Mike Beier started on the mound for the Eagles and struck out 12 in five innings. He allowed unearned runs in the first inning.

Jeremy Glenz pitched four innings in relief and took the loss. He allowed seven runs, but only four were earned. Five errors by the Regal defense hurt their cause.

Earl Rich and Dane Kalevig combined on a four-hit shutout as New London beat the Paynesville Pirates 6-0 in the County Line League.

Rich pitched six innings and allowed only one hit. Kalevig allowed three hits in three innings of relief work but had better control.

New London scored the only two runs they needed in the second. They added three on a home run in the sixth and a lone run in the seventh.
