Bulldogs enjoy three-game win streak

By Ann Stalboerger

The Bulldogs softball team ended their three-game winning streak with a hard-to-swallow loss against ACGC, taking second in a one-day tournament at Paynesville on Saturday.

The Dogs came out strong, but their 5-0 early lead was devastated when the Falcons scored seven unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Unable to dig themselves out of the rut they had created, the Dogs gave up three more runs before losing the championship game 10-6.

"This was a disappointing loss for us, after playing such good ball all week," said coach Tim Woehler.

The bottom of the third really cost the Dogs, according to Woehler. Leading the Dogs at the plate were senior leftfielder Ashley Mackedanz, going 3-4, and sophomore centerfielder Kayla Mackedanz, going 2-4.

Sophomore Valerie Callenius struck out five and took the loss for the Dogs.

The Dogs won their third game in a row by beating the Kimball Cubs 7-3 in the first round of tournament play on Saturday morning.

The Dogs scored three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to clinch the game and advance to the championship game.

Sophomore Kim Hess had a great game at the plate, going 3-3 and scoring three runs.

Also having multiple hits were senior Ann Stalboerger and sophomore Kayla Mackedanz, each having two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Dogs. Mackedanz also had a triple.

Senior Laura Stoneburner added a double to help the Dogs to their win over the Cubs.

Sophomore Amber Chevalier went the distance for the Dogs on the hill, striking out three and allowing only five hits and two earned runs for the pitching victory.

The Dogs are now 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

This week, the Albany Huskies and the St. Cloud Crusaders are scheduled to come to town for some more conference action.
