Big innings cost baseball team in losses

The Bulldogs baseball team split two games at a tournament at Big Lake on Saturday, losing 5-2 to Foley and beating Holdingford 4-1.

Russell Leyendecker The Bulldogs led 2-0 against Foley before the Falcons scored five runs - four unearned - in the top of the sixth inning. The Falcons had six hits in the inning and were aided by two errors by the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second and third innings, but managed only one baserunner in two at bats after Foley took the lead.

The Dogs rebounded to beat Holdingford with senior Josh Krupke pitching a complete game in his first varsity start. Krupke allowed only one run in the game.

"That was fun to see," said coach Brad Skoglund. "We played great defense behind him."

Skoglund noted that junior Tyler Kochman made two terrific plays at second base for the Bulldogs.

Kochman also had two hits and scored a run for the Bulldogs, as did junior Jordan Haag. Senior Josh Kampsen had two hits in both games on Saturday.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Holdingford. Then, after the Huskers had scored a run, they scored two more in the sixth inning to win 4-1.

The Bulldogs are now 4-4 overall for the season. This week, they played at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. They will play at Albany on Thursday, at Maple Lake on Friday, and at St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday, May 6.

Paynesville 10, Annandale 2
The Bulldogs jumped to an 8-0 lead and pounded 14 hits in beating Annandale 10-2 on Friday in a nonconference game. The Bulldogs beat Annandale three times a year ago, including in the subsection finals and in the section tourney.

This time, the Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take a commanding lead, having five hits in both innings.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Leading hitters for the Bulldogs were Mueller and Josh Kampsen with three hits each. Junior Adam Kampsen and Josh Krupke each had two hits.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle scored seven runs with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and beat the Dogs in a conference game on Thursday.

The Dogs built a 5-2 lead through four innings, thanks to a two-run homer by Adam Kampsen in the first inning and to junior Adam Hemmesch, who had an RBI single in the fourth and scored two runs.

But, after getting two quick outs to start the fifth inning, LPGE got seven hits and a walk with two outs and scored seven runs. The Dogs scored a run in both the sixth and the seventh innings but lost 9-7.

The big inning really cost the Dogs last week, said Skoglund. "Against Long Prairie, they just hit the ball well," he said.

The Bulldogs are now 1-3 in the West Central Conference North.

Melrose 7, Paynesville 3
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning against Melrose - rated #1 in Class AA - but the Dutchmen rallied for a conference victory on Tuesday, April 22.

Melrose tied the score with three runs in the third inning, then scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win 7-3.

Senior Russell Leyendecker led off the game with a solo homer for the Dogs. Junior Chad Stang added a two-run double in the first inning.
