Softball team wins home tourney

The PAHS softball team defeated New London-Spicer 8-3 and ACGC 5-2 on Saturday to win the title at their home tournament.

The Dogs (4-3) broke a 1-1 tie against NL-S with four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning, winning 8-3.

Ashley Karger hitting Junior Ashley Karger doubled and tripled and drove in four runs to lead the offense. Junior Kim Hess hit a homerun and had two RBIs for Paynesville, too.

Junior Leah Spanier pitched four innings to earn the victory, and junior Val Callenius pitched three innings to pick up a save.

In the championship, the Dogs beat ACGC 5-2. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead by scoring in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs took the lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. The Falcons cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fourth, but Paynesville scored two runs in the fifth to seal the win.

Junior Amber Chevalier pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits, to earn the victory. She allowed no walks and was aided by error-free defense.

ACGC, on the other hand, walked three and committed two errors, allowing the Bulldogs to score five runs on only four hits.

Hess tripled and had two RBIs. Mackedanz doubled and had one RBI.

The Dogs' game at Melrose - scheduled for Tuesday, April 20 - was rescheduled due to the rain and played on Monday. The Dogs also hosted LPGE on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Dogs will play at Sauk Centre, and they will play in a tournament at Rocori on Saturday. Next week, the Dogs will play at Albany on Tuesday, May 4.

Dassel-Cokato defeated the Dogs 11-3 in a nonconference game on Friday at Paynesville.

After Dassel-Cokato took a 3-0 lead, the Dogs scored two runs in the bottom of the third, as juniors Kim Hess and Kayla Mackedanz singled and scored, to make the score 3-2. But Dassel-Cokato scored two runs in the fourth, two runs in the sixth, and four runs in the seventh to win 11-3.

Paynesville only managed one more run, in the sixth inning as juniors Leah Spanier and Amber Chevalier singled.
