Bulldogs smoke NL-S for first win

By Ann Stalboerger

Trisha Wendlandt at home The Bulldogs softball team picked up their first win of the season on Monday, April 14, smoking the New London-Spicer Wildcats 15-5 in six innings.

The victory not only was the first of the season for the Dogs but was an important one for subsection seating. "It's always nice to beat somebody from your subsection during the season," said head coach Tim Woehler.

Last year, the Dogs lost to the Wildcats by one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior catcher Trish Wendlandt applies a tag too late at home plate as the Wildcats scored two runs in the fourth inning.

Showing no mercy to the Cats this time, the Dogs scored 15 runs while pounding out 17 hits and reaching base 11 times on walks. Rallying late in the game, the Dogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the ten-run rule into effect.

"We were used to seeing a higher level of pitching last weekend at the tournament and saw the ball really well today," said sophomore Kim Hess.

Sophomore Val Callenius picked up the win for the Dogs, striking out four and allowing five hits.

Leading the Dogs at the plate was senior Ann Stalboerger, who was 4-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Trish Chevalier, Hess, senior Ashley Mackedanz, sophomore Kayla Mackedanz, and junior Kayla Rooney all had two hits for the Dogs. Hess and Kayla Mackedanz had the only extra-base hits for the Dogs. Hess had a double and a triple, and Mackedanz had a double.

This week, the Bulldogs played at LPGE on Tuesday. They will host Sauk Centre on Thursday, host a varsity and junior varsity tournament on Saturday starting at 10 a.m., and will host Albany on Tuesday, April 29.

Melrose 21, Paynesville 10
Lack of focus and an abundance of errors cost the Dogs on Thursday in a 21-10 loss against the Melrose Dutchmen.

The Dogs came out inadequately prepared mentally, dug themselves a hole, and were not able to get out of it. The visitors from Melrose took a 9-0 lead in their first three at bats before the Bulldogs scored.

Although the Bulldogs had opportunities to get back in the game, they could not put it all together. Melrose had 17 hits, drew 10 walks, and benefitted from 10 Paynesville errors.

Melrose has always been a good hitting team, according to Woehler, but the Dogs made too many mistakes to help them out.

Senior Susie Swyter and sophomore Kim Hess both showed their hitting skills, each getting an inside-the-park homer for the Dogs. Junior Trish Wendlandt was the only player to get two hits for the Bulldogs.

Paynesville dropped to 1-6 overall with the loss and 0-3 in conference.
