Rangers beat Lakers 7-4 in Stearns County League opener

The Roscoe Rangers beat the Lake Henry Lakers 7-4 Sunday in the amateur baseball opener for both teams.

In the first week of the Stearns County League schedule, Roscoe broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Brent Heinen doubled, and Greg Heinen and Tony Orbeck drew walks. Rick Mackedanz reached on an error, and Todd Leyendecker singled to score three unearned runs.

Roscoe took a 3-0 lead by scoring a run in the second, third, and fourth innings.

Lake Henry tied the score with three runs in the top of the fifth. Steve Lieser and Tim Lieser singled, Mark Spanier walked, and the Lakers were helped by a Roscoe error.

Roscoe added a run in the bottom of the seventh, and Lake Henry scored its final run on a Steve Lieser solo homer in the top of the ninth.

Greg Heinen earned the victory on the hill for the Rangers in relief. In five innings of work, he allowed just Lieser's hit for a single run. He walked four and struck out six.

Russ Schaefer started for Roscoe and pitched four shutout innings.

For the Lakers, Ryan Wuertz started and pitched three innings. Tom Ludwig pitched three innings of relief and got the loss despite yielding just one earned run. Lynn Hemmesch pitched the final two innings for Lake Henry.

Brent Heinen led Roscoe with two doubles. Also getting hits for the Rangers were Greg Heinen, Todd Leyendecker, Jeff Welle, Chris VanderBeek, and Mike Heinen.

Steve Lieser had two hits for Lake Henry, including a home run. Mark Spanier, Tim Lieser, and Jeff Olmscheid also had hits for the Lakers.

Roscoe plays at Spicer on Saturday and at St. Martin on Sunday.
