Bulldogs edge Cathedral in softball 3-1

By Michael Jacobson

The PAHS softball team got their third victory of the spring, and first conference win, with a 3-1 win over St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday, April 11.

The Dogs broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the fourth as sophomore Laura Schaefer walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Ashley Ogdahl.

Senior Mel Mages Schaefer scored again in the sixth inning, giving the Dogs a 3-1 lead. She singled in the sixth, stole second, and eventually scored on a passed ball. Schaefer's baserunning was terrific in scoring two runs, said coach Tim Woehler.

Senior Mel Mages hit a 225-foot homerun over the leftfield fence to spark a seven-run sixth-inning rally against Minnewaska on Thursday.

The Dogs had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Mel Mages singled, stole second, and scored on a single by senior Allyson Klenke. But Cathedral had tied the game 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the third, aided by two Paynesville errors.

Senior Jess Engler pitched a complete game to earn the victory on the mound for the Dogs. In her first start of the year, she did a good job of throwing strikes and moving the ball around the strike zone, according to Woehler. She allowed only five hits, walked one, and allowed only one unearned run.

The victory was the first of the year for the Dogs (3-2) in the West Central Conference North.

This week, the Dogs played at Albany on Tuesday night. They will host Sauk Centre on Thursday. On Saturday, the Dogs will play in a tournament at Morris.

Next week, the Dogs will play at New London-Spicer on Monday, April 24, and will host Melrose on Tuesday, April 25.

At home safely Minnewaska, a new WCC North member, led 13-3 before the Dogs rallied, scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth to avoid the ten-run rule and seven in the bottom of the sixth, losing the conference game 13-11 on Thursday.

Senior Allyson Klenke slid safely into home against Minnewaska on Thursday. the Dos trailed 13-3 but rallied before lsoing 13-11.

With the Lakers, who scored six runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth, leading 13-3, the Dogs scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when senior Amanda Skalicky singled, stole second and third, and scored on a single by sophomore Carissa Utsch, as the Dogs avoided the ten-run rule.

Then the Dogs jumped on the Lakers' pitcher in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff walk, senior Mel Mages hit a two-run homer over the fence in leftfield. Her homes went 225 feet into the wind, said coach Tim Woehler, who said it was the first over-the-fence homer he has seen as Paynesville's coach.

After Mages' big hit, sophomore Laura Schaefer followed with a single, and then the Dogs got three straight walks and a two-run double by Utsch, who later scored as well.

Trailing by two, the Dogs went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, losing 13-11. "You've got to give the kids a lot of credit," said Woehler. "They could have called it a day down 13-3, but they came back."

Minnewaska, he added, is a good-hitting team, getting 19 hits against the Dogs, and also a good baserunning team.

The Dogs, now 1-2 in the WCC North, have shown they can compete with everyone in the conference but need to play more consistently. "There's not an easy game the rest of the way," said Woehler. "Our conference is pretty competitive."
