Bulldogs suffer first softball loss

The Bulldogs softball team evened their record last week, losing a nonconference game to subsection rival Rockford 7-3.

The visiting Bulldogs (1-1) opened the game by taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as junior Ashley Spanier smacked a two-run homer.

Rockford, though, scored one run in the bottom of the first and then took the lead with a four-run third.

The Bulldogs scored their third run, closing within 5-3, in the top of the fourth as juniors Val Callenius, Leah Spanier, and Ashley Karger had singles, with Karger's hit scoring Callenius. But Rockford scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sealing the 7-3 victory.

The Dogs outhit Rockford 8-5, but they walked five Rockets and committed three errors.

Callenius took the pitching loss, with junior Amber Chevalier pitching over an inning of scoreless relief.

This week, the Dogs started their conference schedule with a game against Albany on Tuesday. They will also host St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday. Next week, on Tuesday, April 20, the Dogs will travel to Melrose for a conference game.
