Dogs top Holdingford in ninth inning

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs softball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit - scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth and a run in the bottom of the seventh - to force extra innings and then defeated Holdingford 4-3 with a run in the ninth inning.

It was the second straight year that the Dogs have beaten Holding-ford in extra innings in their season opener.

Chelsey Senior Kim Hess singled, stole second and third, and scored when Holdingford's third baseman bobbled a chopper by sophomore Chelsey Kalkbrenner with two outs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 3-3.

Sophomore Chelsey Kalkbrenner hit choppers to third that Holdingford could not field cleanly, scoring the tying run in the seventh and the winning run in the ninth on Friday.

Hess walked, stole second, advanced to third, and scored on another error on a chopper by Kalkbrenner with two outs in the ninth inning, scoring the winning run in the 4-3 game.

In the sixth inning, junior Jess Engler walked and senior Ashley Spanier singled to put runners on the corners. Engler scored the Dogs' first run on a double steal, and senior Ashley Karger had a RBI single to score Spanier.

Holdingford scored all three of their runs in the first inning, using two hits, including a triple, and an error to score three runs.

Senior Amber Chevalier held the Huskers to three hits over the next eight scoreless innings to earn the pitching victory. She did not walk a single batter in nine innings of pitching.

This week, the Dogs (1-0) were scheduled to play Rockford on Monday, but this game was postponed to Friday, April 22, due to the weather. The Dogs were also scheduled to play at Albany on Tuesday.

The Dogs will play at St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday, and they will host a four-team varsity tournament on Saturday with ACGC, EV-W, and NL-S. Games start at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Next week, the Dogs will host Melrose on Tuesday, April 19.
