Five-run rally gives Kimball the win

The varsity softball team lost 7-5 on Tuesday, April 4, to Kimball in their season opener.

Kelly Loesch pitched a great game by holding Kimball at two runs until the seventh inning. Loesch gave up only six hits.

Kimball pulled ahead in the first inning by scoring two runs right away. The Bulldogs managed to hold Kimball with only two runs for a majority of the game.

The Bulldogs were having a hard time hitting the ball, so they weren't getting many chances to score runs.

In the sixth inning things started to pick up for the Bulldogs. Jenny Habben got a hit and reached third base by error. Mellody Veldkamp had an infield hit to score Habben. Tricia Hemmesch hit a ball past the left fielder's head for a triple. Veldkamp was able to score on Hemmesch's hit. Lisa Hemingson was up to bat next and she also hit a triple. Hemingson also scored to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-2.

In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs took the field thinking they only had to hold the Cubs, but they had no such luck. The Bulldogs ended up having some mental errors in this inning, which cost them five runs.

The Bulldogs had to score three runs to tie in the bottom of the seventh. Laurie Barten hit a single and stole second base. Hemmesch hit a single which advanced Barten. The Kimball pitcher threw a wild pitch and Barten was able to score. Paynesville had runners on second and third base when a ground out ended the inning.

Coach Tim Woehler said, "If we can cut down on our mental errors, we should start to come out on top."

The Bulldogs' game against BDRSH on Friday was postponed due to the weather. It was rescheduled for Monday, April 24.

The Bulldogs were upset about their loss but are determined to win their next game. The Bulldogs host Sauk Centre tomorrow night and New London-Spicer on Friday. Both games start at 4:30 p.m. Next Tuesday, they will play at Melrose.
