Dogs win softball opener 7-6 against Holdingford

By Michael Jacobson

The PAHS softball team opened their spring season with an extra-inning victory at Holdingford on Thursday, beating the Huskers 7-6 in eight innings.

Paynesville led the entire game until the bottom of the seventh, when the Huskers tied the score at 6. Junior shortstop Kim Hess threw out the potential winning run for Holdingford at the plate in the seventh inning after the Huskers had tied the score.

The Bulldogs then scored the winning run in the top of the eighth. Junior Leah Spanier, who pitched the entire game to earn the victory, reached base on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a single by sophomore Amanda Skalicky, and scored on a groundout by junior Katie Nelson.

Skalicky had three hits and an RBI, Spanier had two hits and scored two runs, and Nelson had two RBIs for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Spanier allowed one hit but no runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve the victory.

The Bulldogs had built a 6-2 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth, but Holdingford rallied to tie the score with four runs in their last three at bats, forcing extra innings.

The Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as junior Val Callenius hit a two-run single, scoring junior Kayla Mackedanz and Hess, who also had two hits.

After Holdingford tied the score, the Dogs scored two more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Callenius and Spanier scored in the fourth inning with Skalicky having an RBI single. Hess scored again in the fifth inning on a double steal with junior Ashley Spanier, and Callenius hit an RBI double, scoring Spanier and giving Callenius three RBIs for the game.

This week, the Bulldogs played their only game on Monday at subsection-rival Rockford. Next week, the Bulldogs will have their home opener and will start conference play when they host Albany on Tuesday, April 13. They also will host St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday, April 15.
