Female tracksters start indoors at SCSU

By Mandy Mayer

The Paynesville girls' track team traveled to St. Cloud for their first indoor meet this season at St. Cloud State University on Saturday. There were 14 girls' teams at the meet, most of them bigger schools.

"The team had a very successful start competing against topnotch competition at this indoor meet," said coach Dave Rangaard.

No team scores were kept, but Paynesville did a great job for their first meet. The Bulldogs had 13 top-ten finishers. "I was very encouraged by that the team showed at this meet. This team has a lot of talent," said Rangaard.

Senior captain Jen Hess was the only Bulldog to take first, winning the 1,600-meter run by 30 seconds. Seventh grader Kacy Nehowig also ran that race and finished ninth.

Hess and Nehowig helped the 3,200-meter relay team take second as well. Also running in that relay were eighth grader Brooke Schmitz and junior Mandy Mayer. Schmitz also was third in the 800-meter run.

Senior Missy Bachman was second in the pole vault, clearing 9' 6", and also took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 32' 4".

Sophomore Jessica Virant placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. She had her personal best time.

Other top ten finishers were ninth grader Kendra Johnson (fifth in the high jump), junior Danny Lieser (fifth in the long jump), senior Heidi Jansen (sixth in the shot put), and ninth grader Ranea Eastling (10th in the 55-meter dash).

Two relays also placed in the top ten. The spring medley relay team - Eastling, Jansen, Johnson, and senior Carla Hemmesch - took ninth, and the 1,600-meter relay team - Sara Lieser, Mayer, Hess, and Nehowig - took tenth.

The team's next meet will take place on Monday, April 11, at 5 p.m., at the indoor track at St. John's University.
