Local students compete in Special Olympics basketball

The Area 7 Special Olympics basketball tournament was held on Saturday, March 16, in Elk River.

About 50 athletes competed in individual skills contests. About 10 teams participated in half-court or full-court competition. Athletes were divided by skill level for competition.

The following athletes from Paynesville competed: Matt Bayer, Melissa Everson, Mark Gibbs, Yvette Lounsbury, Michael Naujokas, Dallas Richardson, Crystal Rudy, and Dan Schutz.

Everson received a second place ribbon for her individual skills.

A team of Bayer, Gibbs, Lounsbury, Naujokas, Richardson, Rudy, and Schutz also took second place in their division. The team competed against five other teams, losing only to Elk River.

The team did defeat a team fron St. Cloud.

Two athletes, Katherine Parks and Erica Wander, practiced with the team but were unable to attend the competition.
