Wildcats chase Bulldogs from district playoffs

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs girls' basketball team defeated Kimball last week to advance to the district quarterfinals where they were eliminated by the state-rated New London-Spicer Wildcats.

The Dogs, seeded eighth in District 20, defeated ninth-seeded Kimball 61-48 on Tuesday, Feb. 22, but lost at top-seeded NL-S on Thursday 62-29.

Girls basketball vs NL-S The Wildcats, hoping to earn a return trip to state, outscored the Bulldogs 20-4 in the second quarter, turning a 17-9 first-quarter lead into a 37-13 halftime advantage.

Sophomore Kristin Lang scored eight points for the Bulldogs against NL-S on Thursday one of only four Dogs to score in the 62-29 loss.

That was more points than NL-S would need as the Cats held the Dogs to ten field goals on 10 of 46 shooting. NL-S also outscored the Dogs 25-16 in the second half, winning 62-29.

Only four players scored for the Dogs, led by senior guard Kim Hess with nine points and four assists. Senior forward Brittany Lieser and sophomore post Kristin Lang added eight points each, and junior guard Ashley Lieser completed the Dogs' scoring with four points.

The Wildcats also beat the Dogs - who finished their season with a record of 5-18 - in January.

The Wildcats also defeated fourth-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral 62-36 in the district semifinals on Saturday and advanced to the district finals against second-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins on Tuesday night.

Against Kimball, the Dogs opened a 17-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They led 29-21 at halftime, 43-33 at the end of three quarters, and won 61-48.

The Dogs shot 45 percent (22 of 49) and had three players reach double figures in scoring. Seniors Brittany Lieser had 17 points and five rebounds, Hess had 13 points and nine assists, and Kendra Johnson had 11 points and five steals.

The Dogs, meanwhile, allowed only four Kimball players to score, with two Cubs accounting for 39 of their team's 48 points.
