Paynesville Press - February 23, 2005

State wrestling preview for PAHS

By Michael Jacobson

Six Paynesville wrestlers will compete in the individual competition at the state tournament this weekend, starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Every weight class in the individual competition features 16 wrestlers - two from each section. To win a state title, a wrestler must win four straight matches. Medals are awarded to the top six wrestlers at each weight class.

Here are the first-round matchups for the six Paynesville wrestlers:

At 103, ninth grader Jordan Christian (32-4), rated ninth in Class A, will face Trevor Kruger (26-6), a ninth grader from Barnesville, in the first round. In the same quarter bracket as Christian is Ben Meyer (36-4), a ninth grader from ACGC rated sixth in Class A.

At 112, junior Joe Sheridan (29-5) will wrestle Todd Hulshizer (23-11), a sophomore from St. Charles. Sheridan did himself a big favor by winning the section title, as the quarter bracket where he would have ended up had he been the section runner-up now includes three of the top four rated wrestlers.

At 135, junior Joel Kerzman (18-3), rated third at 135 in Class A, will face Tim Wegscheid (29-9), a senior from New York Mills, in the first round. In the other half of his quarter bracket are Shelby Parks (16-11), a senior from Blooming Prairie, and Nick Peterson (24-12), a junior from Eden Valley-Watkins.

At 140, junior Keith Klein (26-14) faces sophomore Jonny Roemhildt (35-4) of Waterville-Eylisan-Morris-town in the first round. Also in his quarter bracket are senior Kevin Widmer (35-0), who took sixth at state last year and is rated second this year, and senior Brent Weller (34-6) of New York Mills. At 145, junior Sean Glenz (35-2), rated first in Class A at 145, drew Shane Braun (26-5), a junior from St. Charles. Also in his quarter bracket are John Anderson (17-6), a senior from Barnesville, and Shane Kahn (27-10), a sophomore from Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted/Lester Prairie.

At 152, senior Jack Mueller (31-7) faces senior Lucas Smith (36-4) of Southland in the first round. Smith is rated seventh in Class A. Also in Mueller's quarter bracket is senior Spencer Lund (34-3) of ACGC, who is rated sixth in Class A. Lund defeated Mueller 1-0 in January during a dual meet.

Lund and his ACGC teammates, coached by PAHS alumni and Paynesville resident Tim Roberg, will make their third state trip in four years. They face Sibley East in the first round at state. ACGC is currently rated fifth in Class A.

Pierz (rated first), New York Mills (rated second), and Grand Meadow/ Leroy-Ostrander/Kingsland (rated third) are all on the other half of the Class A draw from ACGC.

The Dogs finished the season rated 23rd in Class A by the Guillotine.
