LPGE, Benson trip boys in hoops

By Michael Jacobson

markLong Prairie-Grey Eagle used a 14-3 run to close the first half and defeated the Bulldogs boys' basketball team 53-41 on Friday night in Paynesville.

The Thunder kept the Dogs winless in the West Central Conference North by outscoring them 20-6 in the second quarter, building a 30-12 halftime lead.

Junior Mark Andrie launches a jump shot against LPGE on Friday. He scored eight points against LPGE and led the Dogs with ten points against Benson last week.

The Bulldogs did outscore the Thunder in both the third and fourth quarters, cutting LPGE's lead to ten in the final minute, but lost 53-41.

"This was a game of halves," said coach Phil Carlson. "We seemed flat-footed and very lethargic in the first half as LPGE led by 18 at the half. We seemed to get more aggressive in the second half and it showed as we beat them in both quarters. Consistency, aggressive-ness, and much better defense allowed us to get back into it."

"It's no secret that we played many teams very tough the first time through our schedule, and they are getting much more aggressive the second time through," added Carlson. "We need to 'fight fire with fire' and do the same to our opponents."

aj Sophomore Cory Nietfeld led the Dogs with 16 points and 10 rebounds against LPGE.

The Dogs (0-9 in the WCC North and 2-17 overall) have three regular season games left. They played at Albany in their last conference game on Tuesday.

Senior A.J. Benson grabbed a loose ball for the Bulldogs in the second quarter on Friday, leading to a fastbreak basket for Paynesville.

This week, they will host ACGC - coached by PAHS alum Terry Miller - on Friday night, which will be Parents' Night for the Dogs. And, next week, they will host Holdingford on Tuesday, March 1.
