Bulldogs lose three times at home

Katrina and Stacy The Bulldogs girls' basketball team lost three home games last week, to New-London Spicer 69-25 on Monday, to Sauk Centre 35-32 on Tuesday, and to Albany 68-53 on Friday.

On Monday, Feb. 12, the Dogs hosted the state-ranked Wildcats of New London-Spicer.

The Cats played very good defense the first quarter and held the Dogs scoreless for the entire quarter. The Dogs played tough defense, but the Wildcats were hard to stop. They scored 16 points.

The Dogs picked it up a bit in the second quarter, scoring nine points to the Wildcats' 19. At the half the Dogs trailed 35-9.

The Dogs scored 16 points in the second half but were held to single-digit scoring in each quarter. The Cats scored 17 points in each.

The Cats proved their state-rating in their 69-25 win.

The Bulldogs played at St. Cloud Cathedral yesterday and will play at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Friday.

For the district playoffs, the #7 Bulldogs will play at #2 Litchfield on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Dogs hosted the Mainstreeters of Sauk Centre, and lost a low-scoring affair.

At the start of the game, the Dogs played very aggressively. Both teams played good defense. Both teams were held to single digits in the first quarter, with the Dogs taking a 7-4 lead.

The Bulldogs led by five at the half but the third quarter was a disaster. The Mainstreeters, after managing only 11 points in the first half, scored 18 points in the third quarter, while holding the Bulldogs to two, and took a 29-18 lead.

The Dogs came back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Streeters 14-6, but it wasn't enough. The Dogs take another close loss 35-32.

Stacy Lieser led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

For their third game of the week, the Dogs hosted the Albany Huskies on Friday night.

Paynesville seniors - Crystal Humbert, Katrina Orbeck, Mel Veldkamp, and Steph Krupke - were honored before the game, as it was their last home game.

The Dogs, though, had to play without Krupke, their leading scorer, who was sick.

The Dogs started strong, but the conference-leading Huskies were stronger the first half. The Dogs were outscored by 19 points the first half, trailing 38-19 at halftime.

The second half was different for the Dogs. They outscored the Huskies in both quarters, but it was not enough to make up for the first half.

Lieser led the Dogs with 20 points, and Katrina Orbeck scored ten to pick up the scoring without Krupke.

The Dogs ended the week winless with a 68-53 loss.
