Stars win on last-second goal

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team finished the regular season by outshooting its opponents 78-48 in two games, but came away with only one win last week.

The Stars beat Big Lake/Becker 3-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Richmond but lost 4-2 to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Thursday, Feb. 14, in Long Prairie.

Against Big Lake/Becker, the Stars picked up their fifth win of the season by scoring two goals in the third period. Junior center Jeremy Curran scored the game-winning goal with five seconds left in the game.

The Stars outshot Big Lake/ Becker in each period and 40-18 for the game.

Neither team scored in the opening period. In the second period, defensemen Darren Stommes and Mike McMahon hooked up to give the Stars the lead, as Stommes scored assisted by McMahon.

But Big Lake/Becker scored twice in the last five minutes of the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Mike Anderson scored the equalizer for the Stars with four minutes to play, and Curran scored the final goal with five seconds to play.

Curran had a goal and an assist for the Stars as did Stommes. Senior Andrew Schmitt added two assists.

Against LPGE, the Stars dug themselves a hole by allowing three first-period goals and another in the second period to trail 4-0. The Stars had 20 shots on goal and scored two goals in the third period, but could not make up for their early deficit.

Schmitt and Stommes scored goals for the Stars in the third period. Schmitt also had an assist.

The Stars outshot LPGE 20-7 in the third period and 38-30 for the game.

"The team is still working very hard," said head coach Kevin Mooney. "We just can't seem to find the back of the net."

The Stars were seeded eighth in Section 8AA and faced top-seeded Moorhead on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Spuds finished second in the state last year in Class AA and are currently ranked sixth in the state.

The Stars opened the playoffs against Moorhead a year ago and lost 9-0, a pretty good result, according to Mooney, considering the level of the competition.
