Stars shut out LPGE to end regular season

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team shut out Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 2-0 in their regular-season finale on Thursday.

After a scoreless first period, junior forward Mike Anderson scored midway through the second period for the Stars, assisted by senior center Kyle Curran and sophomore defenseman Calvin Doll.

Sophomore wing Andy Schramel scored the Stars' other goal in the third period, assisted by sophomore defenseman Mike Mueller, from Paynesville, and Anderson.

Junior goalie Blake Theisen made 23 saves to record a shutout for the Stars, who improved to 5-14-1 with the victory. The Stars, though, went winless in ten games against Central Lakes Conference foes, playing these larger schools in boys' hockey for the first time. In nonconference games, the Stars are just above .500 for the season.

The Stars outshot LPGE 31-23.

This week, the Stars start the section playoffs. The Stars, seeded #7, played at St. Cloud Tech, the #2 seed, on Tuesday. If the Stars can upset Tech, they would play either at #3 Alexandria or at #6 St. Cloud Apollo on Saturday at 7 p.m.

River Lakes--0 1 1 - 2
