Wrestlers edged by Rocori, Maccray at quad

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldog wrestlers beat Kimball but lost close matches to Rocori and Maccray on Friday in a quadrangular hosted by Rocori.

The Bulldogs clobbered Kimball 56-23, but were edged by Rocori 30-26 and by Maccray 36-31. The Dogs' season record now stands at 15-14.

Against Rocori, the Bulldogs split the 14 individual matches, but the Spartans outpinned the Dogs 3-1 and outscored them in bonus points 9-5. Eight of the 14 individual matches were decisions, with each side winning four.

The Bulldogs actually built a 13-0 lead against the Spartans, winning the first four weights. But Rocori won the next four weights and got pins at two of the last four weights to rally for a 30-26 victory.

Senior Pat Utsch, at 215, recorded the only pin for Paynesville, giving the Bulldogs a short lead. Sophomore Joey Sheridan, at 112, and senior Matt Kerzman, at 112, earned major decisions for the Dogs. Winning decisions were eighth grader Jordan Christian (103), sophomore Andrew Christian (119), junior Todd Thielen (125), and sophomore Sean Glenz (152).

The Bulldogs also built a big early lead against Kimball, winning the first three matches to take an 18-0 lead, and after a brief rally by the Cubs they won six of the last seven weights. Jordan Christian and Sheridan started the match with pins for the Bulldogs, and Thielen won by injury default.

Also winning by fall for the Dogs were sophomore Joel Kerzman (135), Glenz (152), and senior Derek Burris (275). Sophomore Keith Klein and Matt Kerzman added major decisions at 145 and 160 respectively. (Kimball also forfeited at two weights.)

Against Maccray, the Bulldogs rallied from an opening 24-0 deficit and had a shot at victory but lost 36-33. Maccray won the first five weights to build a 24-0 lead.

The Bulldogs did win six of the last nine weights, but Maccray won eight matches to Paynesville's six in all. Maccray had four pins, and the Bulldogs had three pins and won one match by forfeit.

Joel Kerzman (140), Utsch (189), and Josh Tebben (215) recorded pins for the Bulldogs. Matt Kerzman added a major decision at 160. Glenz won an overtime decision at 145, keeping him undefeated (33-0) for the season.
