Albany, Rockford top Bulldogs in boys' hoops

The Albany Huskies rallied to beat the Bulldogs boys' basketball team in a conference game on Thursday, downing the Dogs 44-41.

Kampsen with the bucket The Bulldogs started fast, leading 16-8 after one quarter, but once again could not hold the lead and lost a close conference contest.

The Dogs led 27-20 at the half, but Albany outscored them 24-14 in the second half. The two teams combined to score 11 points in the third quarter, with Albany cutting into the Dogs' lead with a 7-4 advantage in that frame.

Senior Adam Kampsen is fouled by Rockford player while making a layup in the first quarter last week as ninth grader Cory Nietfeld (32) looks to rebound. Kampsen scored 14 points in the game.

The Bulldogs still led 31-27 to start the final quarter, but Albany scored 17 points, while holding the Dogs to 10, and won 44-41. St. Martin's Josh Harrison scored six points in the fourth quarter and led Albany with 12 points.

Seniors Adam Kampsen and Doug Mages led the Bulldogs with 14 and 11 points respectively.

The loss was the seventh straight for the Bulldogs, who are now 3-5 in the WCC North and 6-11 overall.

This week, the Bulldogs will host LPGE on Friday night for Parent's Night. Next week, they will host Melrose on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Also next week, in a scheduling change, the Bulldogs' game at New London-Spicer has been moved from Tuesday, March 2, to Thursday, Feb. 26.

Rockford 85, Paynesville 54
State-rated Rockford defeated the Bulldogs 85-54 in a nonconference game on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

The Rockets took control of the game with a big run to end the first quarter. They led 12-11 midway through the quarter but ended the quarter with a 15-3 run to build a double-digit lead.

The Dogs cut that lead by one with a strong second quarter, but the Rockets outscored the Dogs 41-22 in the second half.

Rockford made 11 three-pointers in the game, led by eighth grader Nick Haugen, who made seven treys and scored 30 points.

The Bulldogs were led by seniors Adam Kampsen (14 points), Doug Mages (12 points), and Adam Hemmesch (10 points).
