Crusaders, Lakers topple Dogs

By Michael Jacobson

St. Cloud Cathedral didn't need a dramatic comeback this time to defeat the Dogs in boys' basketball. The Crusaders outscored the Dogs 41-24 in the first half and 19-6 in the third quarter to beat the visitors from Paynesville 74-47 in a conference game on Thursday.

Cathedral needed a second-half rally to beat the Dogs 57-54 in January in Paynesville.

This time, the Crusaders used balance scoring - with three players scoring nine points each in the first half - to easily beat the Dogs.

The Bulldogs did outscore the Crusaders 18-14 in the fourth quarter, as both teams utilized their reserves.

Sophomore Cory Nietfeld led the Dogs against Cathedral with 14 points.

"This was a very tough week for our team to be defeated twice by large margins," said coach Phil Carlson. "This is what high school basketball does - it really tests your resilience in adverse times. Our players are learning to deal with getting through adverse times."

"We will pull it together again," predicted Carlson. "When you get knocked down, you keep getting back up and preparing for the next challenge."

Carlson said the Dogs need to play with better intensity and need to play better team defense, especially denying other teams points in the lane. "We have five tough games left in our regular season, and we need to be revved up for a strong effort in each one," said Carlson. "We can do it and need to do this as we are looking forward to finishing the season strong."

This week, the Dogs (2-15) played at Benson on Tuesday. They will host LPGE on Friday night. Next week, they will play at Albany on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
