Dogs swept by Cathedral, HL-W

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' basketball team used four three-pointers in the first half to take a slim halftime lead but saw St. Cloud Cathedral nail five three-pointers in the second half to rally for a 61-56 conference victory on Thursday at PAHS.

pass The Dogs built a 26-24 halftime lead that could have been greater had they not shot and missed on a number of good opportunities, according to coach Phil Carlson.

Senior Derek Stanger led the Dogs with 15 points in their 78-52 loss to Howard Lake-Waverly last week.

"The second half saw both teams make runs, and Cathedral hit key threes to extend the lead enough to stay ahead," said Carlson. "It was a strong battle, and our team has nothing but these type of games left. We have struggled to get a win lately, but we have battled sickness and injury. We are looking to get to full strength soon and to keep playing exciting basketball."

Cathedral outscored the Dogs 37-30 in the second half to win the West Central Conference North contest 61-56. The loss extending the Dogs' losing streak to four games overall and three in conference.

Junior Cory Nietfeld led the Dogs with 24 points against Cathedral. He also grabbed 13 rebounds (nearly half of the Dogs' total of 31) and had nine steals, being one short of another triple-double.

Junior Ben Moser added 12 points, all coming from behind the three-point line courtesy of four treys.
