Stars eliminated by Sartell, 2-1

By Jenny Habben

Jenny Habben The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team ended their season on Tuesday, Feb. 5, with a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Sartell/Sauk Rapids in the first round of the section playoffs at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Senior Jenny Habben (in white) assisted on the Stars' only goal.

River Lakes led for much of the game after scoring in the first period, but Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored two times in the third period to win 2-1.

The Stars came onto the ice ready to win by skating hard and putting a goal in the net only a minute into the first period. Ninth grader Janile Lewis went the distance on a pass from senior Jenny Habben.

The puck flowed rapidly up and down the ice as both teams struggled to take control of the game, but neither team was able to score until the third period.

Forty-nine seconds into the third period, the Storm scored to tie the game 1-1. Seven minutes later Sartell/Sauk Rapids took the lead with another goal.

The Stars pulled their goalie for the last two minutes of the game to have an extra skater on the ice, but they were unable to tie the game.

The River Lakes Stars were outshot 20-16 by the Storm, who beat the Stars three times this season, all by one-goal margins. The Stars lost to the Storm 2-1 in November, 3-2 in January, and 2-1 in February.

The Stars ended their season with a record of 3-19-1.
