Woes continue in loss to Sauk

By Kevin Mehr

On Friday night, the Bulldogs boys' basketball team took on the Mainstreeters of Sauk Centre, the same team that gave the Dogs an 86-43 whipping in December. The Dogs worked hard in practice all week and were determined to play a much better game, but the Mainstreeters proved to be too much for the Dogs, who fell to the Streeters 63-44.

The Dogs started out strong, scoring the first five points of the game, but Sauk Centre was on fire and scored 24 first-quarter points to just 11 for the Dogs. After a second quarter that saw both teams combine for less than 20 points, the Dogs trailed 37-17 at the half.

Senior forward Josh Kampsen dives to the floor to try and snare a loose ball against the state-rated Streeters of Sauk Centre on Friday night. Kampsen led the Bulldogs with nine points and 15 rebounds.

In the second half, the Dogs played even with the state-ranked Streeters. The Dogs actually outscored the Streeters 27-26 in the second half, but Sauk Centre maintained a 20-point lead for most of the half.

A dismal first quarter prevented the Dogs from pulling off an upset. "That's been our Achille's heel all year. One bad quarter, or a bad stretch, is what keeps on costing us the games," said a frustrated head coach Phil Carlson after the game.

Senior post Josh Kampsen led the Dogs with nine points and 15 rebounds.

With the loss, the Dogs fall to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the West Central Conference North.

This week the Dogs played host to Eden Valley-Watkins on Monday. They also will host Albany and St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday and Friday. The Albany game will follow the normal schedule, with the C-squad and junior varsity starting at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity following around 8 p.m.

The Cathedral game, on Friday, is a make-up game from Monday, Feb. 3, when school was canceled, and will be a doubleheader with the girls. The boys' varsity will play in the main gym at 6:15 p.m., with the girls varsity following around 8 p.m. The boys' junior varsity will play around 8 p.m. in the middle school gym.

The boys also will play at Rockford on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
