River Lakes tops Benson 5-1

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team defeated Benson/Morris 5-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 3, behind four points from sophomore forward Amber Schulzetenberge.

Schulzetenberge scored two goals - including the go-ahead goal in the second period - and added two assists in the third period. Her goal gave the Stars a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first period and then her second goal, after Benson/Morris tied the game at 1-1, gave the visiting Stars a 2-1 lead with three minutes to play in the second period.

Sophomores Marie Omann and Allie Stalboerger scored goals a minute apart five minutes into the third period to extend the Stars' lead. Sophomore Anna Olson scored the Stars' final goal with eight minutes to play.

In addition to Schulzetenberge's multi-point game, Omann had a goal and two assists. The Stars - now 8-10-2 - outshot Benson/Morris 39-14.

This week, the Stars played Litchfield on Tuesday in their last regular season game.

The Stars, seeded eighth, will start the section playoffs with a home game against Sartell/Sauk Rapids, seeded ninth, on Thursday, Feb. 12. This game will be held at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynes-ville and starts at 7 p.m.

If the Stars win, they will play in the section quarterfinals against top-seeded Elk River on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m. The section semifinals will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Brainerd at 5:30 p.m.

Alexandria 3, River Lakes 0
The Stars lost a conference game to Alexandria on Thursday at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

After a half hour of scoreless hockey, Alexandria scored with four minutes left in the second period. They added two goals late in the third period and won 3-0.

The Cardinals outshot the Stars 42-16, with senior goalie Trish Wendlandt making 39 saves for the Stars, keeping the game close.
