Stars beat Sartell/SR, reach section quarterfinals

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team advanced to the section quarterfinals last week before being eliminated by top-seeded Elk River, the defending state champion, 7-0 on Saturday. On Thursday, the Stars, seeded ninth, beat eighth-seeded Sartell/ Sauk Rapids 6-5 in overtime to advance to the section quarterfinals.

Junior Amber Schulzetenberge scored three minutes into overtime on a rebound to give the Stars a 6-5 victory in a back-and-forth contest with Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Thursday. The game featured four ties and five lead changes.

After Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored two goals within the first three minutes of the third period to take a 5-4 lead, ninth grader Abbie Rhoda scored for the Stars with seven minutes to play in regulation, knotting the game at 5-5.

River Lakes outshot Sartell/Sauk Rapids 15-7 in the third period, 5-2 in overtime, and 36-20 for the game.

Junior Allie Stalboerger scored the only goal in the first period to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

Both teams scored three times in the last ten minutes of the second period, and they traded the lead. First, Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead, but the Stars responded with three straight tallies, building a 4-2 lead. Ninth grader Kenzie Novak, senior Janile Lewis, and Schulzetenberge (short-handed) scored in a five-minute span to regain the lead for the Stars.

But Sartell/Sauk Rapids, still on the power play, scored with 14 seconds left in the second period to get within 4-3 and scored again 34 seconds into the third period to tie the game 4-4.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids had beaten the Stars 4-3 in Sartell in December, but the Stars won a rematch 5-3 in January in Richmond.

Elk River, the defending state champions and the top seed in Section 8AA, defeated the Stars 7-0 on Saturday night in Elk River, ending the Stars' season. No other statistics were available.
