Bulldogs fall in hoops to Melrose, Minnewaska

The Melrose Dutchmen built a ten-point lead in the first half and then put the game away by outscoring the Bulldogs girls' basketball team 19-10 in the fourth quarter, winning the conference game 61-43 on Thursday in Melrose.

Melrose took a 31-21 lead at the half. The Dogs cut that by one after three periods, to 42-33, but Melrose outscored the Dogs 19-10 in the fourth quarter to win 61-43.

The Dogs had beaten Melrose 45-36 in January at home.

This time, Melrose outrebounded the Dogs (31 to 27), outshot the Dogs (58 shots to 41 shots, though they barely edged them in shooting percentage, 38 percent to 37 percent), and forced the Dogs to commit 30 turnovers.

Sophomore post Kristin Lang led the Dogs with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Dogs (3-6 in the WCC North and 4-14 overall) will play in Grove City against ACGC on Friday this week, and they will play their last regular season game at Holdingford on Tuesday, Feb. 22, next week.

Minnewaska 59, Dogs 46
The Minnewaska Lakers outscored the Bulldogs 17-6 in the third quarter, opening a 16-point lead, and defeated the Bulldogs 59-46 on Monday, Jan. 31, in Paynesville.

The Lakers led the nonconference game 28-23 at the half before limiting the Dogs to two field goals and two free throws in the third quarter, taking a 45-29 lead into the final quarter.

The Dogs outscored Minnewaska 17-14 in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers prevailed 59-46.

Senior guard Kendra Johnson led the Dogs with 20 points, shooting five for seven from the field and 10 for 13 from the free-throw line. She also led the team with four assists and five steals.
