Dogs drop conference games to Sauk, Melrose

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' basketball team took first-quarter leads against Sauk Centre and Melrose last week in West Central Conference North basketball games, but both teams, who are battling for the conference lead, rallied for victory, Sauk winning 69-54 and Melrose winning 64-41.

The Dogs led 18-11 after one quarter against Sauk Centre on the road on Friday night and led 12-11 after one quarter against Melrose at home on Tuesday, Feb. 1. But both the Streeters and the Dutchmen took the lead by halftime thanks to strong second quarters. The Dogs were outscored by Sauk Centre 20-11 in the second quarter and trailed 31-29 at halftime, and they were outscored 20-10 by Melrose and trailed 31-22 at halftime.

The Dogs' woes continued in the third quarter against both teams, as Sauk enjoyed a 19-9 advantage in the third quarter and built a 50-38 advantage going into the final quarter, winning 69-54. Melrose outscored the Dogs 21-9 in the third quarter and led 52-31 heading into the final quarter.

The Dogs (0-7 in the WCC North and 2-13 overall) played fairly even against both teams in the fourth quarter but could not cut the deficit.

The Dogs were led in scoring in both games by sophomore Cory Nietfeld, who had 17 points against Sauk Centre and 16 against Melrose. Sophomore Ben Moser added 13 points against Sauk on Friday.

This week, the Dogs played at Howard Lake-Waverly on Monday. They will play at St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday, and next week they will play at Benson on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
