Long-distance shooting not enough for Dogs
Seven three-pointers - including five by senior Brooke Schmitz - were not enough as the Bulldogs girls' basketball team lost its only game last week, 59-51 to BBE in a nonconference game on Monday, Jan. 30.|
Schmitz scored 19 points, her second best total of the season, including five three-pointers. Senior Ashley Lieser added another two three-pointers for Paynesville.
Senior Brooke Schmitz made five three-pointers and scored 19 points, but the Dogs lost 59-51 to BEE on Monday, Jan. 30.
The Dogs made 28 percent of their three-point attempts (7 of 25) but shot only 24 percent (12 of 51) on two-point field goals. The Dogs also made only 38 percent of their free throws (6 of 16).
BBE led 33-30 at the half and then outscored the Dogs 26-21 in the second half to win 59-51.
"We played well in spurts," said coach Jackie Parsley. "We also played a lot more aggressive at both ends. (However) we couldn't get past the lapses."
Ashley Lieser, in addition to her 10 points, had a career-high 15 rebounds and five assists. Schmitz added six steals and three assists to her 19 points. Senior Lynn Lieser contributed nine points and seven rebounds.
BBE was led by April Hanson with 26 points, making 13 field goals. Emily Roelike, a ninth grader from Lake Henry, added 10 points, and Tiffany Gruber, a senior from Lake Henry, added eight points for BBE.
This week, the Dogs (5-11) played at LPGE on Tuesday. They will host St. Cloud Cathedral on Friday in a conference game. Next week, they will host neighboring Eden Valley-Watkins in a nonconference game on Monday, Feb. 13.
