Melrose upsets Dogs in girls' hoops

By Michael Jacobson

The Melrose Dutchmen rallied to upset the Bulldogs girls' basketball team on Friday, handing the Dogs their second conference loss with a 45-39 victory.

The Bulldogs led at halftime 20-18, thanks to a strong second quarter in which they outscored Melrose 11-3. But the Dutchmen outscored the Bulldogs 27-19 in the second half.

The Dutchmen outrebounded the Bulldogs 30-28 and also forced 18 turnovers, while committing only 17 themselves. Perhaps most importantly, they caused senior Amanda Glenz and junior Kim Hess, Paynesville's two leading scorers, to foul out.

Melrose outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter 10-7, holding on to win 45-39, while holding the ball for much of the quarter.

Junior Kendra Johnson scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter, providing most of the offense for the Dogs.

Glenz had 21 points, seven rebounds, and three steals before fouling out. Hess had nine points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

Head coach Jackie Parsley said the Bulldogs - now 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the West Central Conference North - were not in synch on Friday. (The Bulldogs had beaten Melrose 58-57 in December at Melrose.)

This week, the Bulldogs hosted Eden Valley-Watkins on Tuesday, and they will host Sauk Centre on Thursday. Glenz entered the week needing only 26 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
