Minnewaska edges Dogs on mat

The Minnewaska Lakers rallied to beat the Bulldogs in the inter-conference wrestling champship on Saturday night in Paynesville.

Minnewaska, the south champ, scored nine points in the final two weights to beat Paynesville, the north champion, 36-31.

Minnewaska took an 18-0 lead with pins at the first three weights, but the Bulldogs cut that deficit to 22-18 by winning four of five weights from 125 to 145. After the Lakers got a technical fall at 152, they led 27-18.

Senior Josh Kerzman got a pin at 160, senior Ryan Glenz got a 12-10 decision over state-rated Jacob Bryce, and junior Pat Utsch scored a major decision at 189 to give the Dogs a 31-27 lead entering the final two matches.

But in a battle of unbeatens at 215, Minnewaska prevailed and then got a pin at 275 to win the match. Senior Marty Engen suffered his first loss of the season at 215 at the hands of Minnewaska junior Nathan Stoen, ranked fourth at 215 in Class AA. Stoen scored six points in the third period to win 7-4.

Other winners for the Bulldogs were sophomore Jack Mueller with a 4-2 decision at 125, ninth grader Sean Glenz with a pin in overtime at 130, senior Adam Christian with a 7-4 decision at 135, and junior Matt Kerzman with a first-period pin at 145.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs' record to 15-6 for the season.

This week, the Dogs will travel to Canby on Friday night with the junior varsity match starting at 5:30 p.m. The Dogs will also host the Paynesville Duals on Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m. Next week, the Dogs will host Litchfield, a section rival and the top-rated team in Class AA, on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with the junior varsity starting at 6:30 p.m.

Conference meet
The Bulldogs finished first in the individual conference tournament on Friday in Sauk Centre, scoring 191.5 points to top Long Prairie-Grey Eagle with 167 points and Sauk Centre with 148 points.

Nine Bulldogs wrestlers earned All Conference honors by taking either first or second in their weight class. Conference champions for the Bulldogs were senior Adam Christian at 135, senior Josh Kerzman at 160, and senior Marty Engen at 189. Taking second were senior Pat Noonan at 119, ninth grader Sean Glenz at 130, senior Justin Reeck at 140, ninth grader Joel Kerzman at 152, junior Pat Utsch at 215, and senior Brad Person at 275.

Ninth grader Joey Sheridan (103), sophomore Cory Christensen, sophomore Jack Mueller (125), and senior Ryan Glenz (171) placed third for the Bulldogs.

By finishing undefeated in conference dual meets and by winning the conference tournament, the Bulldogs captured the overall conference title.

Triangular
Dominance in the lower weights helped the Bulldogs sweep a triangular against Rocori and Annandale/Maple Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The Dogs won the last five weights in each match, sweeping the matches from 160 to 275 and beating Rocori 51-14 and Annandale/Maple Lake 47-18.

Against Rocori, the Dogs led 21-14 going into the 160-pound match but got five straight pins to end the match, scoring 30 points. Senior Josh Kerzman (160), senior Ryan Glenz (171), junior Pat Utsch (189), senior Marty Engen (215), and senior Brad Person recorded these pins for the Bulldogs.

Against Annandale/Maple Lake, the Dogs led 19-18 going into 160 but got two technical falls and three pins to score 28 points in the last five weights. Kerzman (160) and Glenz (171) started the run with technical falls. Engen (189), Utsch (215), and Person completed it with pins.

The Bulldogs also got strong starts in the triangular. The Dogs led 15-0 against Rocori and 9-0 against Annandale/Maple Lake. Ninth grader Joey Sheridan won two matches at 103, a pin and a major decision, to give the Dogs early leads. Sophomore Cory Christensen also won twice at 112, by technical fall and forfeit.

Other winners for the Bulldogs against Rocori were senior Pat Noonan at 119, senior Justin Reeck at 140, and senior Josh Johnson at 145. Other winners against Annandale/Maple Lake were ninth grader Sean Glenz at 130 and ninth grader Joel Kerzman at 145.
