Against Sartell, on Thursday at the National Sports Center in St. Cloud, the Sabres scored three goals in the first period and controlled the play after that.

"We just came out flat and didn't play well," said coach Kevin Mooney. The team, he added, had trouble playing on the Olympic-sized rink at the National Sports Center and falling behind early did not help at all.

The Sabres added two goals in the second period and two goals in the third. They outshot the Stars 33-4.

Against Willmar, at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville on Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Stars had a strong start, scoring two goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore wing Andy Schramel and junior defenseman Mark Kissner scored the goals for the Stars with assists from senior center Kyle Curran and junior wing Mike Anderson.

Willmar scored a goal seconds into the second period to tie the score and scored a power play goal in the last minute to take a 3-2 lead.

Willmar controlled play in the final period, keeping the puck in the Stars' zone for most of the time and adding three more goals, again scoring in the first minute of the period and the last minute.

Willmar outshot the Stars 43-16.

This week, the Stars hosted Benson/Morris on Tuesday. They will host Brainerd on Thursday at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond and they will play at Minneapolis Edison on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
