Rally propels LPGE to last-second victory

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' basketball team lost a heartbreaker to LPGE on Friday night, leading for most of the game before LPGE rallied in the fourth quarter to win 59-56.

The Dogs led for nearly the entire game, but the Thunder took the lead 57-56 with 4.5 seconds to play, scoring after the Dogs missed two free throws. The Dogs tried a length-of-the-court pass but failed to connect, and LPGE made two free throws to make the final margin 59-56.

The Bulldogs had taken the lead in the first quarter, outscoring LPGE 20-7 in the first eight minutes. They led 30-19 at the half and 41-32 entering the fourth quarter.

But the Thunder outscored the Bulldogs 27-15 in the final eight minutes, making three treys and connecting on 10 of 12 free throws.

Coach Phil Carlson said the game was a tough loss for the team, since they led for so much of the game.

The Dogs, now 3-2 in conference, trail LPGE, now 3-1, by a half game for the conference lead.

The Dogs, 6-5 overall, played at Eden Valley-Watkins on Monday and hosted Maple Lake on Tuesday. They will play a conference game at Melrose on Thursday, and next week they will play at St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
