River Lakes falls 2-1 at Willmar

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team lost two Central Lakes Conference games last week: at Willmar 2-1 on Thursday and to St. Cloud Apollo 10-7 in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The Stars (6-14) led 1-0 against Willmar after junior forward Amber Schulzetenberge scored midway through the first period and held that lead for a full period.

But Willmar's Mandi Samuelson scored twice in the second period, first on a power play with six minutes to play and then an even-strength goal with three minutes to play, to give Willmar a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals outshot the Stars 26-16, including 13-2 in the second period.

Neither team scored in a scoreless third period, with Willmar securing a 2-1 victory. The Cardinals avenged a 4-1 loss to the Stars in Paynesville in December.

This week, the Stars hosted Sartell on Tuesday in Richmond. They will host Princeton on Friday at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond in their last home regular-season game. The Stars will also travel to play Morris/Benson next week on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
