Dawg cagers sweep Cathedral, Sauk

The Bulldogs girls' basketball swept two conference games - at St. Cloud Cathedral and at home against Sauk Centre - last week, raising their record in the West Central Conference North to 3-4.

lynn The Dogs held Cathedral to 30 points on Thursday, winning a road game in St. Cloud 46-30. The Dogs built a 19-16 win in the first half but outscored the Crusaders 27-14 in the second half.

Senior Brittany Lieser led the Dogs with seven points in the second quarter as they outscored Cathedral 12-8 and took the lead at halftime. Sophomore Kristin Lang and senior Kendra Johnson led the Dogs in the second half with eight and six points respectively.

The Dogs outrebounded the Crusaders 53-25, with Lieser leading the way with 16 boards to go with her 12 points. Four other Dogs grabbed at least six rebounds each: Johnson, 8; junior Lynn Lieser, 8; junior Ashley Lieser, 7; and Lang, 6.

The Dogs also outshot Cathedral, making 21 of 52 field goal attempts (40 percent) while the Crusaders shot only 22 percent (13 for 60). Senior Kim Hess had nine assists for the Dogs' offense.

The Dogs, however, committed 22 turnovers, compared with only 11 for the Crusaders.

The Dogs, on a two-game win streak, improved to 3-4 in the WCC North and 4-10 overall.

"Another great team effort," said coach Jackie Parsley of the win. "The girls are playing with a lot of confidence right now."

The Dogs played at Howard Lake-Waverly on Tuesday. They will travel to Long Prairie on Friday and will host Minnewaska next week on Monday, Jan. 31.

Paynesville 60, Sauk Centre 40
The Dogs ended with a 17-3 run to defeat Sauk Centre 60-40 in a con-ference game on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The Dogs - who lead throughout the contest after taking a quick 9-2 lead in the first quarter - led 38-31 after three quarters but outscored Sauk Centre 22-9 in the fourth quarter. The Streeters got within six points twice in the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter (at 40-34 and again at 43-37) before the Dogs clinched the game with a 10-0.

kayla Junior Ashley Lieser started the decisive run with a layup after a steal, and then senior Kim Hess - who led the Dogs with 18 points - hit Lieser on backdoor play, and she passed the ball to junior Lynn Lieser for another layup. Lieser , who had 11 points, made two free throws off another feed from Hess, who also led the Dogs with seven assists.

Senior Kayla Mackedanz scored 11 points in two games off the bench last week for the Dogs, helping the girls' team to two conference wins.

Hess hit senior Brittany Lieser for a short jumper, and Lieser, who was second on the team with 13 points, hit another shot for a 53-37 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

After Sauk made two free throws, the Dogs ended the game with another 7-1 run, dominating the fourth quarter despite Hess and senior Kendra Johnson fouling out. Senior guard Kayla Mackedanz, a reserve, scored six points and had two steals in extended playing time due to the team's foul trouble.

"It was a great win for us," said Parsley. "The girls played with great heart and determination."

The Dogs never trailed in the game and built a 24-18 halftime lead, but Sauk cut the Dogs' lead to three two times in the third quarter. Over the last 12 minutes of the game (the last half of the third quarter and all the fourth quarter), the Dogs outscored Sauk 32-15.

The Dogs, with the win, avenged a one-point loss at Sauk in December.
