Bantams win district tourney

Bantam team The Paynesville-New London-Spicer (PNLS) Lakers Bantam B hockey team won four games to take first place in a five-team, round-robin tournament in Redwood Falls from Jan. 11-13.

The Lakers started with an 8-1 win over host Redwood Falls on Friday night. Nick Dahlen led the scoring with three goals for a hat trick. Also scoring for PNLS were Kevin Hartmann, Justin Bork, Brian Downs, Matt Schoen, and Jamie Paul.

The team won two games on Saturday. PNLS defeated Watertown (S.D.) 8-2 in their first game of the day. Dahlen, Paul, and Bo Sjoberg each scored two goals for the team, while Mike Mueller and Alex Naujokas added a goal apiece.

In the second game, PNLS beat the Cooper Hawks 8-3. Again Dahlen led the scoring with two goals. Paul, Trevor Schwandt, Naujokas, Mueller, Derek Looman, and Downs scored the other goals.

The final game of the weekend pitted PNLS against the weekend's other undefeated team, Cambridge-Isanti. PNLS played their best game of the weekend and won 5-1. Dahlen scored two goals again, while Paul, Hartmann, and Schoen added a goal apiece.

The Lakers benefited from excellent goaltending throughout the weekend. Cody Flanders and Sam Bayer combined to give up only seven goals in four games.

Overall, the PNLS Lakers Bantam B team is enjoying a very successful season with a record of 13-2-1. They hope to cap the season with a run at the regional championship during the first weekend of March in Richmond.
