The River Lakes Stars had a great week with two wins against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Alexandria.

On Tuesday, Jan. 11, the girls played LPGE at home in Richmond and won 3-1. Kari Turkowski scored two goals, and Courtney Karsch had two assists.

In the first period, there was again no scoring for either team. That seems to happen quite often for the Stars.

In the second period, the Stars pulled through and scored their first goal of the game by Turkowski, assisted on a shot by Karsch, putting the Stars ahead. From that moment on, the Stars played quicker and the game progressed. Both the offense and the defense did great jobs in playing their position and having great plays.

Within two minutes of the third period, LPGE scored to tie the game. The Stars had been playing well, so the tie wasn't nerve-racking. That turned out to be true when Marya Losinski and Turkowski each scored goals to make it a 3-1 victory.

LPGE had several good shots, but all were saved by Shari Vogt in net for the Stars.

On Thursday, the Stars had their last game in Paynesville at the Koronis Civic Arena for the year. They competed against Alexandria, and it was also parents' night.

The Stars had defeated Alex before, so they were really fired up. Again Turkowski scored two goals as the Stars defeated Alexandria 4-0 in a Central Lakes Conference contest.

Turkowski is one of the leading goal scorers in the area, with 22 tallies in 17 games so far this season.

In the first period, the Stars weren't playing up to their potential at first, but after Mary Beth Johannes scored a nice goal that all changed. They started to have fun. Scoring in the first period for the Stars was a great sign since it is an unusual occurrence.

Right away, the coaches put out the third and fourth lines so they could get some experience under their belts and they did a a great job. They put together what they had learned and had some great plays. Melissa Jungels scored an unassisted goal to end the first period 2-0 in favor of the Stars.

The Stars were playing great and also having fun on the ice, which is also a big part of the game. Turkowski scored a great goal right by the net on a rebound from a shot from the point by Karsch. The Stars were having good chances to skate it up and do some great stickhandling. The Stars led 3-0 after two periods.

In the third period, everyone was getting some playing time and having fun doing it. Turkowski scored her second goal, and the last of the game, to give the Stars another victory of 4-0.

Shari Vogt recorded another shutout in goal as the Stars raised their record to 11-6.

"The main thing is that it was really great getting everyone playing time," said coach Tom Petroski. "We skated up the puck and had some good plays."

The Stars played yesterday against Willmar and play Morris in Richmond tomorrow night at 7 p.m. It may be there last home game so come out and watch!
